Outdoor TVs, Digital Signage Displays Keep Their Cool

As the leader in engineering outdoor televisions and commercial digital displays designed to operate under harsh conditions, we often receive inquiries from companies in need of TV, video monitor or digital signage display units for their specialized – often extreme – situations. For example, a manufacturing setting that throws-off ambient high temps when working non-stop – such as an auto assembly plant or steel mill.
We continuously test our hi-def outdoor televisions & digital signage models. Our most recent, extreme heat testing of a 55″ Pro Series outdoor HDTV (SB-5517HD) proved that SunBriteTV and SunBriteDS weatherproof displays are built to endure extreme conditions – both outdoors and in.
In Q4 2014, SunBriteTV engineers provided National Testing Systems (NTS), a certified testing facility located in Santa Clarita, CA with the SB-5517HD direct-sun tolerant Pro Series display. The objective of the test was to confirm our confidence in our displays functioning in extreme environments. The display was placed in a test chamber for five (5) days, 24 hours a day and experienced no problems. This test was to simulate an auto plant or steel mill type of environment where heat rises towards ceiling mounted displays.
The SB-5517HD was placed inside a heat testing chamber.
An engineer describes the rest of the test: “The unit sat on a table during the test. Power was supplied to the unit for the entire test and a test pattern ran on-screen to show how the unit would react to constant extended heat exposure. A photo was taken of the unit before heat was supplied to the test chamber. Then, the test chamber was then heated to 55°C or 131°F. It ran at this temperature for five days straight – no breaks to allow cool-downs. Each morning the unit was inspected to see if there were any problems or changes. No changes, no problems were observed. After a completed day five, the test chamber was shut down and post heat pictures were taken. The unit was functioning properly at the conclusion of the test.”
The displays proved they are built to “take the heat” over an extended period of time with no damage to internal components.
The testing chamber had no air circulation. It was, essentially, an oven. Imagine Las Vegas or Phoenix … in summer. Then raise the temperature another 30 degrees, with no breaks for night-time cooler air.
In comparison, here’s a look at average and high temperatures in outdoor settings:
- Las Vegas, July: 106° F.
- Phoenix, AZ, July: 107° F.
- Death Valley Desert, July: 117° F.
- Highest recorded temperature on earth – Death Valley, July 1913: 134° F.
The NTS heat test proved our units can perform in outdoor environments as designed … and also in enclosed settings with relentless high-temps and little or no air circulation.
“Our displays are typically considered outdoor displays but we have proven that even in the most extreme factory conditions like a steel foundry where displays are exposed to high temperatures, oil, dust and dirt, our displays can and will survive,” adds SunBriteTV CEO Cameron Hill.

Another test conducted by NTS exposed a SunBriteTV HDTV to excessive fog and salt-air conditions – simulating 3 years of placement near a beach or ocean. Again, the HDTV was fully operational before, during and after the entire test.
How would a standard indoor LED TV stand-up to high-heat and humidity testing? Not well. Indoor TV internal components damage easily. Their warranties state not to place the television in direct sunlight, and “…do not install in a hot or humid place.” In fact, what other outdoor display company has put their units through extreme testing besides SunBriteTV? The answer is none. That, pretty much, says it all.
